Recap
Council met on June 9, 2026. Here are the main items I tracked from the meeting.
Food Rescue Agreement Summary: Council voted to invite Alberta Food Rescue to the September 8 meeting. Result: Passed How I voted: For Why I voted that way: I voted in favour of this to give Food Rescue an opportunity to speak to council. They were invited to the June 9 meeting, but did not attend. What happens next: Alberta Food Rescue will be notified of the September 8 meeting and invited back.
Bylaw #775 - Establish a Library Board Bylaw Summary: Third reading of the Library Board Bylaw was defeated. Result: Defeated How I voted: Against Why I voted that way: I felt that forming a library board without having a business plan in place, and without consulting Carmangay, which currently provides library services to Barons, was the incorrect way to go about a library discussion. What happens next: The library topic is now concluded. That being said, there is an opportunity to take a new approach by discussing the topic with Carmangay and spending time looking at the dollars and cents to determine if a local library board makes financial sense and improves service.
July/August Meetings Summary: Council, as it has done in previous years, voted to not hold regular council meetings in July and August. Result: Passed How I voted: For
Year-Round Yard Assistance Summary: Council directed administration to explore this program idea and to investigate if other organizations like FCSS have something similar that Barons may be able to support. Result: Passed How I voted: For Why I voted that way: I heard from residents that some are looking for extra help taking care of their yards, and I heard from others who are looking for ways to help their neighbours. This seems like a natural fit. What happens next: Administration will come back in September with ideas for how a pilot program could work.
Bylaw and Policy Review Matters Summary: Council made motions related to bylaw and policy review matters.
Municipal Inspection Summary: Council considered a motion to conduct a municipal inspection. Result: Defeated How I voted: Against Why I voted that way: I felt the inspection was not needed, and that the reasons provided were not sufficient to warrant an invasive process.
Palliser Schools Joint Use Planning Agreement Result: Passed How I voted: For
Privacy Management Plan Result: Passed How I voted: For
The approved Village minutes are the official record. This recap is mine as an individual member of council, and I am not speaking on behalf of council or the Village.
